With the publication of the draft of the revised state aid rules for the public funding of airports and start-up aid to airlines on 3 July 2013, state aid in aviation is back on the EU's policy agenda. Bearing the title "Aviation – Does it need state aid?", our conference will not only look into these revised state aid rules, but it will also go further and concentrate on broader state aid related issues.

The Beer Sector has been making a significant social, cultural and economic contribution to Europe for many hundreds of years. Whilst brewing has faced a number of challenges during the global economic crisis of recent years, it has also shown remarkable strength in adversity, demonstrating that the Beer sector can maintain its competitiveness in the Single Market and, given the appropriate policy framework, help to drive economic growth, job creation and recovery.
The ship repair and conversion sector exerts a strong influence in the "greening" and the safety improvement of the existing fleets in the EU and outside Europe. It is also confronted to strong competition, not always fair, in the global market.
Many consumer products could have a longer service-life. However, particularly in the IT and household appliance sectors, some components seem to be designed to become obsolete so that the product becomes unusable after a certain period of time or rely on the use of specific consumable items. This has a number of damaging consequences: the cost to consumers of early replacement of the product or dependence to expensive consumable items, the overuse of natural resources and raw materials.
