Background

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is preparing an own-initiative opinion on "Virtuous Circularity of Energies in Europe".

The opinion will explore how circularity can contribute to strengthening Europe's industrial competitiveness, resilience, and strategic autonomy. It will examine how a more efficient use of resources, including waste streams, together with innovative circular business models, can enhance the competitiveness of European industry by improving energy and resource efficiency, increasing productivity, reducing costs and lowering strategic dependencies.

Particular attention will be paid to the opportunities and challenges facing key industrial sectors and value chains, including energy-intensive industries, manufacturing and other strategic industries, as well as to the role that circular approaches can play in supporting industrial transformation, resource security, and long-term competitiveness. The opinion will also assess how circularity can contribute to a more resilient and competitive European industrial base in the context of the Clean Industrial Deal and the forthcoming Circular Economy Act.
