The EESC welcomes the communication of the European Commission on a "Space Strategy for Europe" and endorses the proposed guidelines. The EESC encourages the Commission to continue on this path and to set its sights on even more ambitious horizons. The Committee emphasizes that space activities are nowadays part of everyday life of European citizens. It focuses on the crucial role of SMEs as well as on the education and public awareness raising as far as space activities are concerned.

The "Space and Society: bridging the missing links" project aims at helping to generate and maintain political support for current and future space programmes on both EU and national levels; bringing the attention of a larger audience and downstream stakeholders to the announced benefits from the European space policy as well as defining new and concrete actions to be implemented in this context.

The EESC has been always involved in space issues and adopted many opinions in this field. In 2014 the Committee decided to organise an initiative on space to identify the most suitable means to achieve the priorities he has set out in its opinions.

Six events were organised in various EU States.

The closing conference took place at the EESC to report on local events and to present the recommendations and future actions to the Commission.

The European Economic and Social Committee, with support of the Italian Space Agency, organised a conference entitled "European space policy: are we on the right track?". The objective was to discuss Space programmes at both European and national levels. The conference took place on 5 June from 9.30 to 13.30 in the premises of the Italian Space Agency. The conference brought together representatives of European and Italian authorities, representatives from industry and SMEs.

In the framework of the Space & Society project, the EESC and the project partners organized six events in six different countries. The objective was to inform, network and discuss on specific thematic subjects related to EU space policy. Lithuania was one of the six selected countries. A conference entitled "Boosting regional success in space: the Baltic way!" was organized on 20 May 2015 in KTU Santakos Valley, Kaunas.
