I welcome the European Commission’s Communication ‘Preparing for a wider Union’ as an important contribution to ensuring that the European Union is institutionally, politically and financially prepared for future accessions.
The European Union must ensure that today’s political choices do not lead to further inequalities or leave future generations carrying an unfair share of the costs. This is the central message of an opinion adopted by the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), which calls for intergenerational fairness to become a measurable principle embedded across all EU policies.
The EU-Central America DAG met on 6 October 2026 in Brussels and online. Members received briefings from the EEAS, DG TRADE and DG INTPA on recent political, economic and social developments in Central America, the implementation of the Association Agreement and EU cooperation priorities. Particular attention was given to labour issues, the role of civil society and preparations for the regional labour conference. During its internal session, the DAG reviewed follow-up to the Joint Declarations adopted in 2025 and 2026, discussed future intersessional activities and webinars, and considered developments related to labour rights and democratic governance in the region.
During the 26th meeting, the DAG Members exchanged views with representatives of the EEAS, DG TRADE and DG INTPA on the political, social and economic situation in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, the implementation of the Trade Agreement and ongoing cooperation initiatives. Discussions also covered labour rights, sustainable development, civil society participation and current Single Entry Point complaints. In its internal session, the DAG discussed preparations for the joint events in Quito, including the regional labour conference, and follow-up to the Joint Declaration approved in Lima in 2025.
