Background:

The main objectives of the revision of the Roadworthiness Package are to (i) improve road safety, (ii) reduce air pollutant emissions, and (iii) facilitate the free movement of goods and people. The new rules are expected to take into account the growing presence of electric vehicles and adapt to emerging technologies. Other measures envisage digital vehicle registration and periodic testing certificates as well as simplification of cross-border data sharing, and a better protection of citizens.

The aim of the opinion is to look at how an enhanced and more effective Roadworthiness Package would help better enforcement of road safety in the EU, improve the functioning of the internal market and protect citizens from fraudulent malpractices.
