Background

On 17 July, together with the proposal on the Common Agricultural Policy post-2027 and the proposal for a Multiannual Financial Fund (MFF), the European Commission published a proposal amending the Common Market Organisation (CMO) Regulation currently in force, in order to introduce a number of strategic measures to:

  • strengthen the EU agri-food sector,
  • ensure greater security of supply and food self-sufficiency,
  • increase legal certainty.

The proposal modifies different elements, including:

  • Update of the school scheme provisions,
  • Sectoral interventions on protein crops,
  • Protection of certain meat-related terms to improve transparency on food content and nutrition, helping consumers make informed choices,
  • Provide for the possibility to lay down marketing standards for protein crops, beef, pork, sheep, goat meat and cheese to better inform consumers, including about product origin,
  • Improving preparedness in relation to the availability of agricultural supplies during emergencies and major crises situations by enhancing coordination,
  • Reference thresholds for certain agricultural products used as a basis for triggering safeguard measures,
  • Measures for the hemp sector.
