Energy connectivity, electricity grids

Practical information

Background

Strengthening energy interconnectivity is key to energy security, lower energy prices and achieving the EU’s decarbonization targets. It is also a broader element within the framework of the New Pact for the Mediterranean and will also facilitate collaboration with other regional actors through the IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor), connecting the EU and the Middle East, including via energy interconnectivity.

This exploratory opinion sets out to examine measures to modernize grids, promote smart technologies, expand interconnections and support investment in innovative storage and transmission solutions, serving to improving the integration, reliability and sustainability of EU energy infrastructure. It will also examine how to overcome regulatory and technical barriers that slow down progress. The aim is to help build a more integrated and resilient European energy system while boosting collaboration with neighbouring regions further future proofing energy security.
