A special attention to Ukrainians with disabilities
Before the war, there were 2.7 million Ukrainians with a disability. But what happens when disaster strikes? Ukrainians with a disability talk of being left behind, unable to access information, without accessible transport, with inaccessible evacuation centres and bomb shelters and a lack of help from humanitarian aid organisations.
One organisation fighting for the evacuation of Ukrainians with disabilities is the disability organisation Fight for Right. Part of the organisation's leadership has fled to Denmark, where EESC member Sif Holst has met with them and has tried to mobilise help from Danish disability organisations. "The four women I have met with are proud and dedicated women. They were able to bring the clothes on their back, but that is about it, and yet they ignore their own needs, in order to continue their work, fundraising for more to flee and finding accessible transport."
