Mainstreaming biodiversity

Sunday 27 October 2024
17:30-19:00 (GMT-5)

Mainstreaming biodiversity in climate action: the role of nature-based solutions

Nature-based solutions provide ecosystem services while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and respecting the rights and culture of the people concerned, such as local communities and indigenous people.

This side event will explore and promote nature-based solutions which simultaneously address climate change and biodiversity loss, such as protecting natural habitats, restoring ecosystems, forests and wetlands, sustainable land management and sustainable agriculture practices

Key elements will include:

  • nature-based solutions;
  • cooperation between scientists, policymakers and stakeholders;
  • appropriate impact assessments and monitoring mechanisms;
  • public awareness and multi-stakeholders' governance at all levels, including the systematic, deliberative, early and consistent participation of local communities and civil society organisations in the drafting, implementation and monitoring processes of new and existing policies.

Towards a circular economy in harmony with nature

Friday 1 November 2024
13:15-14:45 (GMT-5)

Towards a circular economy in harmony with nature

This side event, organised in the context of the Leadership Group on Biodiversity & Climate of the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform, will explore the opportunities and foreseen benefits for using circular economy as a tool to mainstream biodiversity in economic sectors.

The event will:

  • highlight and discuss insights from key publications on the nexus between biodiversity, climate and circular economy.
  • present good practices from the EU and beyond, showcasing how the circular economy can contribute – and is already contributing – to biodiversity goals.

Such good practices will also demonstrate that greater policy coherence, at international and national level, is essential to bring about transformative change, highlighting the important role played by the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), and in particular targets 10 and 15 which call for more sustainable production and business conduct.
