Na Europa, o grande potencial da energia geotérmica permanece inexplorado e a União Europeia deve agir rapidamente no sentido de adotar uma estratégia europeia para a energia geotérmica, a fim de tirar partido dos seus benefícios.
Na reunião plenária de outubro, o CESE assumiu uma posição inequívoca sobre o tema da energia. Num parecer elaborado por Zsolt Kükedi e Thomas Kattnig, o CESE sublinha que a produção de energia geotérmica tem emissões de gases com efeito de estufa extremamente baixas e pode desempenhar um papel fundamental na transição ecológica da UE, reduzindo a sua dependência dos combustíveis fósseis e facilitando a descarbonização.
«A energia geotérmica pode dar um contributo significativo para a consecução dos objetivos da UE de neutralidade climática até 2050», afirmou Zsolt Kükedi. «O seu potencial permanece inexplorado e a Comissão Europeia deve avançar imediatamente para a elaboração de uma estratégia global, a fim de utilizar os recursos desta energia», reiterou Thomas Kattnig.
O CESE salienta que o investimento em centrais geotérmicas pressupõe um apoio financeiro a nível nacional. Mais concretamente, serão necessários financiamentos e incentivos públicos para atrair investimento inicial e mitigar os riscos envolvidos.
Além disso, é importante notar que as alterações na política energética ou no financiamento podem ter impacto na atratividade económica dos projetos geotérmicos.
A construção de centrais geotérmicas tem riscos e esses riscos têm de ser identificados com precisão, especialmente em termos de impactos ambientais. Por este motivo, é essencial envolver as comunidades locais nesse processo, de forma a assegurar uma maior aceitação pública.
No entanto, os benefícios ambientais e climáticos da energia geotérmica superam os riscos, dado que esta é uma das melhores fontes de energia renováveis em termos de utilização dos solos, exploração dos recursos e redução da dependência das importações. (mp)
