The EESC believes that the Erasmus for All Programme should be a key instrument for increasing support for education and training in order to enhance citizens' skills, help tackle the high levels of youth unemployment in many Member States, meet the need for qualified labour, and resolve skills mismatches. It is especially important to employ such an instrument at a time of economic crisis and negative repercussions on labour markets.

Sport helps meet the EU’s strategic objectives, brings to the fore key educational and cultural values and is a conduit of integration, since it is open to all members of the public, regardless of their gender, ethnic origin, religion, age, nationality, social situation or sexual orientation. Sport is a tool to tackle intolerance, xenophobia and racism. The principle of good governance and sound management should ensure integrity in sporting competitions.

EESC opinion: Sport and European Values

The public hearing will explore how sport can strengthen European values such as mutual respect, social integration and equality between men and women. Examples of initiatives, which use sport to bridge differences and foster a sense of community will be presented. The aim of the hearing is to draw lessons from such initiatives and suggest new ways to make sport a vehicle for integration in Europe.

2019 will be the 11th time that Brussels welcomes the Tour de France. It’ll also be, after 1958, the second "Grand Départ" of this well-known race staged in the Belgian capital. On this special occasion, an event is being organised by the EESC and Hansgrohe SA/NV, a sponsor of the professional cycling team BORA-hansgrohe which is one of the teams participating in Tour de France, to promote the role and increase the popularity of cycling as one of the clean modes of transport and raise the awareness of their activities in this field.
