Background

The aim of this legislative proposal is to implement the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction.

The proposed directive contains common rules for Member States on marine genetic resources (MGRs), on area-based management tools, including marine protected areas (MPAs), and on environmental impact assessments (EIAs).
