The EESC at UNFCCC COP30

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) will actively participate in the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), to be held in Belém, Brazil, from 10 to 21 November 2025.

For the first time in history, a COP will be hosted in the Amazon region of Brazil, drawing attention to the critical role of healthy ecosystems in ensuring global climate stability. Marking ten years since the adoption of the Paris Agreement, COP30 will be essential for reinforcing multilateralism and international climate diplomacy amid rising geopolitical tensions and socioeconomic challenges. COP30 will focus on mobilising climate finance, climate change adaptation and ensuring a just transition, and countries will be assessed for their updated 2035 climate plans.

‘COP30 must take a decisive step forward from commitment to implementation’. As we move into the implementation phase of the Paris Agreement, civil society actors will be essential in leading the way and translating climate agreements into action on the ground.

The EESC will be part of the EU delegation and will be represented by three EESC members plus the EESC Youth delegate to COP. The EESC delegation will take part in discussions and side events urging the EU, governments and the international community to raise climate ambition and translate commitments into science-based action, with organised civil society playing a key role.

The main messages that the EESC will highlight come from its recent contribution on Climate change adaptation for resilient societiesEESC-CDES joint declaration, its opinion on phasing out fossil fuel subsidies, and its previously adopted opinions and contributions on climate financejust transition, and sustainable agri-food systems.
