Civil society's vision for a European Oceans Pact
Scope and objectives
On 21 January 2025, the EESC will hold a public hearing in the context of the exploratory opinion requested by the European Commission on Civil society's vision for a European Oceans Pact.
The aim of the hearing is to gather input from civil society organisations and contribute to the development of a strategic and comprehensive approach to the ocean.
In particular, the public hearing seeks to:
- Identify deliverables to support healthy oceans, resilient coastal areas, and a sustainable blue economy;
- Explore the economic and social challenges of different economic sectors and how to ensure resilient and productive oceans;
- Discuss oceans governance and the role of local communities;
The event will be webstreamed freely and interpreted into English, French and Spanish.
Context
The European Oceans Pact aims to promote a holistic and coherent approach to all ocean related policies, from ocean governance, to encompassing actions towards healthy and productive oceans, protecting and restoring biodiversity, boosting the EU blue economy, both established and emerging sectors, and consolidating and extending the marine research, innovation and knowledge framework.
