Artivism for Gender Equality

To commemorate this year's International Women's Day (8 March), the EESC is staging a 100% virtual exhibition entitled Artivism for Gender Equality.

The exhibition consists of 25 posters that celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the most visionary agenda for women's rights and empowerment across the world. It highlights struggles for gender equality and women's rights in Europe, the United States of America, Canada, the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The exhibition is being held in collaboration with Women Engage for a Common Future, a non-profit network dedicated to a gender-just and healthy planet for all. WECF consists of over 150 women's and civil society organisations implementing projects in 50 countries.

The online exhibition, which will run from 8 to 31 March 2021 on the EESC's website and social media channels, is being staged as a cultural partnership between the EESC's Directorate for Communication and Interinstitutional Relations and its Section for Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship (SOC)

The event is also being held in cooperation with COPEC (Joint Committee for Equal Opportunities).

EESC's SOC Section
"At the heart of the SDGs is the commitment to ensure that no one is left behind, by reaching those furthest behind. Women make up half of the world population and more than half of the European one, but according to estimates, it will take a good century to achieve gender equality in the world and 65 years in the EU. This is why the EESC's SOC section is determined to boost gender equality in the EU and mainstream it throughout the EESC's work. In 2021, since the pandemic and subsequent economic downturn have substantial implications for gender equality, the SOC section is all the more determined to work towards women's empowerment and to ensure that their often invisible contribution to sustainable development is fully recognised."

In 2019, it adopted a broad own-initiative opinion on:
SOC/610 - Gender equality issues
This opinion comments on several areas of the UN's Beijing Platform for Action and contains an appendix setting out best practices for greater gender equality from all over the world.

In 2020, it issued an opinion on the non-legislative proposal:
SOC/633 - Gender Equality Strategy
