Maintenance of two urban beehives

Background

In line with its commitment to sustainable urban environment, the EESC runs a communication project on the importance of bees and pollinators for ecosystems and food security, and on their global decline. A core component of this project is the maintenance of two urban beehives on the roof of the Committee's building, accompanied by awareness raising activities promoting urban biodiversity and pollinator-friendly green areas.

Subject of the tender

The successful tenderer shall:

  • install and manage two beehives on the roof of the Committee's building in line with the relevant legal requirements, best apicultural practices and the EESC Safety plan for Urban Beekeeping;
  • harvest and package the honey from the beehives for use as promotional gifts by the Committee, in compliance with best apicultural practices and legal norms in force;
  • elaborate and implement a Communication Plan for awareness-raising on pollinators and the urban beekeeping project (events, publications, media campaigns, possible improvement of the project webpage, use of social media, etc.);
  • provide advice to the Committee's EMAS team on sites, plant species and methods for introducing bee-friendly vegetation on the Committee's green areas and green roofs.

Schedule of final outputs

Installation of the beehives within 3 weeks following the signature of the contract by all parties; delivery of duly packaged honey from the two beehives no later than one months from the date of harvesting; communication and awareness raising plan within two months from the contract signature; intermediate report four months from the contract signature summarising the main activities implemented and any recommendations for the remaining contract period; communications activities according to schedule to be discussed; final report within three months before contract expires.

Type of contract

The duration of the execution of the tasks shall not exceed 12 months. The contract may be renewed up to 3 times, each time for a period of execution of tasks of 12 months.

Indicative calendar

  1. Launching of the invitation to tender: estimated timing is around 20 February 2015
  2. Deadline for submission of offers: 2 calendar weeks following the launching of invitation to tender
  3. Contract award: estimated timing is March 2015
