Background:

The Euratom Treaty requires the Commission to periodically publish a nuclear illustrative programme (PINC).

The PINC provides a comprehensive overview of investment needs in the EU’s nuclear ecosystem, encompassing all stages of the nuclear lifecycle.

The PINC supports discussion of the role of nuclear energy in achieving carbon neutrality in the EU by 2050, while also supporting the EU competitiveness, energy security and affordable energy prices, in line with the highest level of nuclear safety.

The EESC has been engaging in particular with the aspect of nuclear safety and waste management. This reflects the fact that safety is seen as a key concern to Europe's civil society.
