Background

The Communication on the European Green Deal elaborated further on the goals of the European Climate Pact, which was introduced for the first time in July 2019 as part of European Commission President von der Leyen's Political Guidelines. On 4 March 2020, the Commission gathered views on ways to engage with the public on climate action through an open public consultation, and requested an opinion from the EESC on the Climate Pact, which was adopted in July 2020. The EESC's recommendations are reflected on the Commission's Communication on the European Climate Pact, and contributed to the development of the European Climate Pact, launched on the 16th of December by Executive Vice-President Frans Timmermans.
