European Economic
and Social Committee
COVID-19 Measures / Fisheries and aquaculture
Key points
- The outbreak of COVID-19 is having a significant negative impact on the EU fisheries and aquaculture sector. The EESC therefore welcomes the European Commission's proposal, which it considers very necessary, and asks the European institutions to adopt it without delay.
- However, the Committee believes that certain additional measures should be adopted, either in this legislative proposal or in other complementary ones. It therefore calls on the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament to take into account the general and specific comments made in the present opinion.
- In line with its declaration on The EU's response to the COVID-19 outbreak and the need for Member States to show unprecedented solidarity, in which it urges the Commission to immediately review the current EU budget to take into account the scale of the crisis caused by the outbreak of COVID-19, the EESC requests that the European Commission provide for an additional, extraordinary budget to enable Member States to deliver the measures the Commission itself has proposed.
