European Economic
and Social Committee
Statement by the President concerning latest developments in Iran and the Middle East region on the occasion of the 604th plenary session of the European Economic and Social Committee
The developments in Iran and the Middle East region are of great concern.
I call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and to protect civilians.
Above all, I am deeply distressed by the loss of civilian lives in all the territories affected.
I urge for the full respect of international and international humanitarian law and align with all those calling for the return to a rules-based multilateral order.
As the conflict aggravates, I urge for deescalation and call for a cessation of hostilities.
Dialogue and diplomatic efforts are the only effective way to bring peace and stability.
I also condemn human rights abuses inside Iran and stand in solidarity with the fundamental aspirations of the people of Iran for a future where their universal human rights and fundamental freedoms are fully respected.
The European Economic and Social Committee will closely follow the direct, and potentially enormous, geopolitical and economic implications of the ongoing conflict for Europe and in particular the impact on citizens and European businesses.
The Committee will continue to reflect on how we can within our mandate engage effectively with this deeply deplorable situation.
