Statement on Georgia
On behalf of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), we express our deep concern about recent developments in Georgia. The decision of Georgian authorities to halt the EU accession process is a clear indication of the country's ongoing democratic backsliding and deviation from the European path. We believe this decision does not reflect the will of the vast majority of Georgians.
Once again, Georgians have taken to the streets in their hundreds of thousands, day after day, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to democracy, fundamental rights, and their wish to be part of the European family.
The unacceptable use of violence by the authorities against peaceful protesters, civil society activists, political opponents, and media workers must cease immediately. The Georgian authorities should address the demands of their people rather than suppress them.
At the EESC, we stand in solidarity with Georgian civil society and the people, who have consistently demonstrated their dedication to democratic values and principles. We will continue to collaborate with Georgian social partners and civil society organisations, with whom we have established privileged and constructive relations over the years through the EU-Georgia civil society platform and the Committee's Enlargement Candidate Members initiative.
