Standing in Solidarity: EESC Workers’ Group Supports Italian General Strike
On behalf of the Workers’ Group at the European Economic and Social Committee, I want to express our full support with the Italian workers and the CGIL, who are organising a general strike on the Friday 12 December.
Once again, workers are being asked to shoulder the heaviest burden of budgetary cuts and tax rises, with little in return. Workers pay more taxes and pensions are tightened, with education, healthcare, housing and safety suffering. The worsening conditions of the country are also provoking an exodus, largely of young people in search of a better life.
We fully support CGIL and Italian workers in their fight for fairness, quality jobs and affordable life, with decent wages and pensions and a retirement age that allows them to actually enjoy it. We join their call for fair taxation, genuine industrial and service sector policies.
In solidarity,
Lucie Studničná
President of the EESC Workers’ Group
