General Strike: Statement of Solidarity with the Italian Trade Unions

We stand firmly with CGIL and UIL as they call for a general strike on 29 November 2024.

This strike highlights urgent issues facing Italian workers and citizens. Rising costs of living, stagnating wages, and cuts to public services like healthcare, education, and transport are worsening the lives of Italian citizens. We share their deep concerns about prolonged austerity measures, which threaten the stability and well-being of workers and communities. The consequences of these policies—declining wages, precarious jobs, and underfunded public services—are unacceptable.
We support the unions’ demands for:

  1. Introduce a windfall tax on extra profits and wealth, and use the resources to fund public healthcare, social services, education, research and more.
  2. Increase pensions and review labour policies to protect job security, health and safety, and counter precarious employment.
  3. Increase wages by public and private collective agreements renewal and an industrial policy plan to ensure sustainable employment.
  4. Respect the right to protest by withdrawing the proposed security bill.

This is a fight for fairness, dignity, and the future of Italy’s workforce. We stand in solidarity with CGIL, UIL, and all those mobilising for a better and more just society.
