At its meeting on 4 June, the EESC Farmers’ Category, chaired by spokespersons Joe Healy and Jaume Bernis Castells, welcomed the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, for an exchange of views on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

During the discussion with the Commissioner, EESC members highlighted the need for a sufficiently strong CAP budget in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), the importance of preserving the two-pillar structure of the CAP and maintaining its common European character. Members also stressed the need to improve income stability for farmers and to strengthen support for generational renewal, which remains essential for the long-term future of the agricultural sector.

In addition to the exchange with the Commissioner, members also discussed recent Agriculture and Fisheries Council meetings, and there was a debate on the rise in input costs for farmers in recent years.

Members appreciated the Commissioner’s valuable input and the opportunity to exchange with him.
