Follow-up to September’s Initiative of the Month
Do you remember the civil society initiative that we presented in September?
The Take a Stand for equality campaign has had the following impact:
Democracy should never be taken for granted and equality is better ensured through equal representation. The Women's Council in Denmark launched a campaign entitled Take a Stand for Equality ahead of the 2025 municipal and regional elections held on 18 November. The campaign clearly worked, as Denmark now has more women than ever in politics, although there is still some way to go to achieve true equality.
Following the election, Denmark has 37% elected women, 5 municipalities with a majority of women on the city council, and 25 female mayors (out of 98). This is an increase of 25% over the previous election (in 2021).
Change does not happen overnight, but Denmark has just taken a step in the right direction. By standing together, listening to each other and supporting one another, civil society initiatives like this can make – and have now made – a difference.
