Study visit to the boat lifts in Strépy-Thieu

On 3 December 2014 a delegation of the Transport Category went on a study visit to the Funicular Lift of Strépy-Thieu near Mons. They were welcomed by engineer Marc Michaux, Director of the Wallonia Public Services.

The visit started with a video explaining the history of the lift and how it was constructed.

Afterwards the delegation had the opportunity to visit and watch boats who moved to a level of 73 meters using the funicular lift. More impressive even were the operating and engine rooms, which are the heart of the whole installation.

The delegation also visited the old hydraulic lift n°4 and machinery room, which is still functioning in its original form. This means that 3 operators do the work themselves and turn the wheels.
