The international role of the euro: A European safe asset for a new geopolitical era?
Growing geopolitical fragmentation, evolving international trade and financial relations, and increasing competition among major currencies have renewed attention on the international role of the euro. While the euro remains the world's second most important international currency, questions persist as to whether Europe possesses the financial architecture necessary to fully support its global ambitions and reduce strategic dependencies.
Against this backdrop, the Section for Economic and Monetary Union and Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO section) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) has decided to organise a public debate entitled "The international role of the euro: A European safe asset for a new geopolitical era?". The event will explore the opportunities and challenges associated with strengthening the international role of the euro and discuss the economic, financial and geopolitical arguments for and against the creation of a European safe asset. Particular attention will be given to the potential contribution such an asset could make to enhancing the euro's attractiveness as a global reserve, financing and transaction currency, improving the functioning of Europe's capital markets and reinforcing the Union's strategic autonomy.
The event will be webstreamed and open to all interested stakeholders. No registration is needed and participation is free of charge.
