Other aspects of key importance to sustainability are fair international trading practices, encouraging more women and young people into the farming sector, and structured stakeholder involvement and dialogue.

La normativa de la UE sobre el uso en la agricultura de productos fitosanitarios (plaguicidas) y otras sustancias químicas figura entre las más estrictas del mundo. Sin embargo, todavía hay margen de mejora para lograr una mayor convergencia normativa a fin de reducir los riesgos asociados al uso de productos fitosanitarios y garantizar un suministro de alimentos sanos y seguros para una población mundial en constante crecimiento.

The European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) adopted the opinion From Farm to Fork: a sustainable food strategy at its September Plenary session, following the European Commission's communication on the Farm to Fork Strategy - for a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system. As an integral part of the European Green Deal, this is the first EU strategy claiming to encompass the entirety of the food chain.

La pandemia de COVID-19 demuestra el carácter geoestratégico del sector agroalimentario y la necesidad de mantener una autosuficiencia alimentaria en la Unión Europea. Por ello, el Comité Económico y Social Europeo (CESE) acoge favorablemente la nueva medida propuesta por la Comisión Europea, destinada a apoyar a las explotaciones agrícolas y las pymes agroalimentarias con problemas de liquidez y a garantizar su supervivencia económica durante esta crisis. Sin embargo, el CESE considera que la Comisión Europea debería crear un fondo extraordinario al margen del presupuesto de la PAC para permitir la puesta en práctica de esta medida.

Farming can only be continued if our natural resources are preserved, warns EESC

The EU needs to put greater emphasis on short supply chains and agroecology in farming in order to preserve its agriculture and make it more resilient to new challenges, such as climate change. Agroecology is also a way to secure our food supply, make our food healthier and as such raise its value. Short supply chains will help smaller farms to increase their income and enliven rural areas.
