Background
EESC exploratory opinion will focus on the upcoming Digital Fairness Act to be proposed by the European Commission by the end of 2026.
The Digital Fairness Act aims to ensure equitable access to digital technologies and online platforms for all citizens. Its key objectives include promoting accessibility, safeguarding privacy, and fostering competition by preventing monopolistic practices among large tech firms.
The Act is expected to be grounded in principles of transparency, non-discrimination, accountability, user empowerment, and the encouragement of competition and innovation. For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the act presents both compliance requirements regarding transparency and fairness, as well as opportunities for improved access to customers and digital tools.
The Digital Fairness Act aims to safeguard users, guarantee openness and accountability, promote fair competition (particularly for SMEs), and foster trust and innovation within the digital economy.
The engagement of the EESC could help shape how the Act is designed to safeguard consumers, without stymieing innovation and competitiveness for businesses.
