The role of civil society in protecting, promoting and reinforcing our heritage of values in view of the upcoming European elections

At its 12th Civil Society Media Seminar, the European Economic and Social Committee looked at European values as part of Europe's heritage. On the eve of the European elections, panellists discussed the challenges and burning issues in contemporary Europe, such as multiculturalism, declining solidarity, growing nationalism and illiberalism and what civil society can do to protect a Europe which upholds its heritage of values - respect for human dignity and human rights, freedom, democracy, equality and the rule of law.

What will the impact of technology such as cobots and HMI mean for workers' skills and workers' income? Does industry 5.0 value human-solving skills and human creativity more than industry 4.0? Will Industry 5.0 mean reshoring manufacturing jobs or more outsourcing? Will manufacturing-as-a-service take on a more significant meaning? With AI taking a more broad and flexible function than the current narrow function existing with Industry 4.0, what decisions shall we allow AI to make? What possible conflicts may arise between people and robots?

The Civil Society Platform complements the political bodies existing within the framework of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, and it allows civil society organisations from both sides to monitor the implementation process and prepare their recommendations to the relevant authorities both in Georgia as well as in the European Union. At the fourth meeting, the Members of the Platform discussed the state of play of the implementation of the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and adopted reports on energy efficiency in Georgia and on climate change in Georgia.

With a view to gathering as much input as possible during the preparatory process for the proposed opinion from a wide range of experts, the hearing will include preliminary presentation on the governance, functioning and structure of the WTO with an exploration towards the strategic role that civil society can represent in a wider plurality of interests and a larger scope of collaboration.

The EESC´s TEN Section, in cooperation with Austrian Federal Railways, is organising a high-level conference on Clean Mobility that will be held in Vienna during the Austrian Presidency on 15 (pm) and 16 November (am) 2018.

The objective of the conference is to stimulate an open dialogue between civil society organisations, experts, and senior-level representatives of EU institutions about the progress made, and to identify current and future challenges in European transport policy.

Extraordinary Group III Meeting

On 14 November, the Group III organised its Extraordinary meeting in Luxembourg, at the premises of the European Investment Bank (EIB). The meeting entitled Communicating Your Europe: Solid Facts and Information was divided in two main parts: one part dealing with the EFSI and the Invest EU Programme (2021-2027) and the other part focussing on a presentation by Eurostat of 1) Big Data, challenges and opportunities and 2) Quality of Life Indicators. Additional opportunities for trade, investment and cooperation and Technological change and its impact on the labour market

Following the signature of the EU-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) on 17 July this year, the EU-Japan Follow-up Committee organised a mission to Japan (Tokyo and Kobe) from 13 to 15 November, with the aim to continue to strengthen cooperation and ties between the EESC and its main partners in Japan and to prepare for the establishment of Domestic Advisory Groups (DAGs) and the Joint Dialogue with the civil society in the framework of the Trade and Sustainable Development Chapter of the EU-Japan EPA.

On the basis of the Cotonou agreement, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is mandated to organise consultation sessions and meetings of ACP-EU economic and social interest groups in order to voice these actors' views on the ACP-EU partnership and foster cooperation between civil society organisations.

Within this framework, the EESC organises regional seminars every year in one of the ACP regions.

This year, the EESC is organising a regional seminar in Windhoek (Namibia) on 8-9 November 2018.
