Digitalisation and Sustainability: practical recommendations from European civil society | 25/11/2020
Scope and objectives

This conference, jointly organised by the German Council Presidency (Ministry for the Environment), the EESC's Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT) and the EESC's Sustainable Development Observatory (SDO), will explore the role of European Civil Society in using digitalization in a way that enables and drives sustainability to support the European Green Deal and the EU sustainable recovery.

Attend this event to:

  • Hear high-level political statements on how different levels of governance plan to ensure continuing political leadership and civil society engagement towards a digital and sustainable transition.
  • Find out about good practice examples from the midst of civil society to learn how we can achieve a digital and sustainable transition in practice and motivate others to adopt similar measures.
  • Discuss the findings and practical recommendations of the recent EESC exploratory Opinion on Digitalisation and Sustainability, specially requested by the German Council Presidency (Ministry for the Environment).
  • Explore the role of European Civil Society in supporting the European Green Deal and the EU sustainable recovery.
Context

We are facing two megatrends: Digitalisation and sustainability. These fundamental transformations must be managed together and in an inclusive way to ensure the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We must frame the next phase of the digital revolution in a way that we achieve the climate neutrality goal enshrined in the European Green Deal and create a wellbeing economy for people and planet. This should enable workers, consumers, SMEs, large companies and non-profit economic actors to benefit alike, especially in the context of the post-COVID recovery.

Live webstreaming of the event can be followed here and on the EESC SDO Twitter account.
