Scope and objectives

On 13 September 2023 the Sustainable Development Observatory of the EESC will host a public event with the aim to follow up on the discussions and outcomes of this year's High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and prepare for the upcoming SDG Summit which will be held one week later in New York.

The invited speakers and participants will reflect on the following questions:

  • The EU's sustainable development journey: achievements, challenges and next steps ahead
  • Global and national perspectives on sustainable development
  • The Spanish Council Presidency agenda on SDGs
  • The actions required to accelerate SDG implementation
  • Taking stock of civil society engagement

The meeting will provide a platform for engaging in a constructive dialogue on the sustainable development journey, challenges, and future prospects, with a particular focus on the European Union's contributions and progress.

This event will be webstreamed and viewers will have the opportunity to send questions live via Slido using the code #SDGs2023. Context

The European Union presented at the United Nations in New York its first Voluntary Review on the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in July 2023. The EU VR contains the EESC contribution assessing the achievements and challenges of the EU policies to attain each of the Goals. To prepare its contribution, the EESC compiled the key messages from a large number of its adopted opinions across policy areas, consulted the former Members of the Multi-Stakeholder Platform on the SDGs and collected views on the EU’s internal and external implementation of the SDGs through an online consultation of civil society organisations.

With only seven years to go to 2030, the world needs to be steered in the right direction. This meeting aims to present and reflect on the main taking of the HLPF and discuss on the next steps ahead to strengthen and reinforce the agenda at the EU level.
