Economic and Monetary Union, Economic and Social Cohesion (ECO)
In the field of economic and monetary union (EMU), the ECO Section covers coordination of economic and monetary policy, broad economic policy guidelines, stability and growth pact, enlargement of the euro zone and other issues relating to economic governance.
The remit of the ECO Section covers the financial perspectives, own resources and the budget of the European Union and statistical questions.
In the field of taxation, the ECO Section is responsible for dealing with problems relating to tax harmonisation and the approximation of laws in this field.
It also addresses issues relating to the financial markets and the integration of these markets.
In the field of economic and social cohesion, the remit of the ECO Section embraces regional and structural policy and cohesion policy.
The ECO Section is also responsible for spatial planning, urban policy and metropolitan areas.

On Tuesday 28 February the ECO Section is organising a hearing entitled "The EU Budget 2014‑2020". The hearing will involve key-stakeholders and shall provide for an exchange of views on the budget framework for the European Union post 2013.
The EESC wants to make sure that organised civil society takes part in shaping the outcome of the budget negotiations. The budget deserves utmost attention in this economically very difficult environment.
EESC President Staffan Nilsson will open the event. The European Commissioner responsible for Budget, Janusz Lewandowski, and the Chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Budgets, Mr Alain Lamassoure will deliver the keynote speeches. This will be followed by interventions from the Danish council presidency, the Committee of the Regions, academics, and representatives from European civil society organisations. The hearing will provide valuable feedback and input for an opinion that the EESC will adopt during its Plenary Session in March 2012.
