Protection of intellectual property rights/OHIM

EESC opinion: Protection of intellectual property rights/OHIM

Key points:

The Committee:

• welcomes the Proposal and finds that Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are a key enabler of the technological and commercial innovation;
• agrees that the proposal to entrust a series of tasks to thean existing EU agency (Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market) would allow to benefit from the OHIM's existing IP expertise and to become operational quickly. It also offers a cost-efficient solution;
• agrees in principle with the proposal to extend the range of tasks that the OHIM should be carrying out;
• feels strongly that it should be included in the list of organisations invited to meetings of the European Observatory on Counterfeiting and Piracy;
• draws the attention to diverse practices of the copyright collecting societies across the EU.
