Enterprises and Industry

The Enterprises and Industry theme covers the EU’s industrial and competition policies, as well as the Single Market, services, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Research and innovation also fall under this heading. Our Consultative Commission on Industrial Change (CCMI) helps European companies to adapt to globalisation, while the Single Market Observatory (SMO) monitors regulations in this area.

The range of sub-themes we deal with encompasses:

  • Industrial policy
  • Market policies
  • Competition policy
  • Services (including banking, commerce, insurance and tourism but excluding services of general interest)
  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Professional qualifications
  • Company law
  • Research and innovation
  • Intellectual property
  • The customs union
  • Single Market
  • Self- and co-regulation
  • Industrial change

Many of these issues are handled by the Section for the Single Market, Production and Consumption (INT).

The Section for Transport, Energy, Infrastructure and Information Society (TEN) also intervenes in the area of services, with the SMEs, Professions and Crafts category participating where SMEs are concerned.

The CCMI helps to support European industries in anticipating change, modernising and adapting, to create a sustainable industrial base that safeguards jobs and working conditions. This means developing new products and services, backed up by European research and innovation.

The Single Market Observatory (SMO) monitors the operation of the Single Market and self- and co-regulation issues.
