Give a Soul to Europe on Europe Day

9 May 2012 By: Staffan Nilsson 4 Posts

The cooperation we have had in the EU is a success! You may think it is crazy and naïve to say so in times of crisis, turmoil, unemployment and insecurity across Europe. Still I want to say it today, on Europe Day, as we must dare to see things in perspective.

Viewed in the light of Europe's ravaged history of centuries, the creation of the European Union and the 50-60 years of cooperation can be considered a great success. On many occasions I have quoted Göran Rosenberg who wrote in 2010:

"Without a concept of Europe, however, is no Europe, only a fuzzy and difficult distinct peninsula on the West Asian land mass populated by small people with strange languages and with a historic tendency to kill each other".

We as civil society and our politicians must stand up for the European idea. We should like to venture daring solutions to the problems we face. Only cooperation and solidarity can lead us further forward!

Today is the European Schuman day 9 May 2012! I applaud the yearly initiative "Give a Soul to Europe" jointly organised in Brussels by GST Europe, in partnership with EU institutions, EU bodies such as the EESC and the Brussels City Hall. At the EESC we celebrate Europe this Saturday when we open our doors to all the public curious to see how we work for Europe

I am convinced that cooperation is the way. But what kind of cooperation?
We must introduce codes of conduct still more transparent and closer to EU citizens.
