Euro-Mediterranean civil society calls for urgent progress towards more accountable governance in the region

24 Oct 2012
Ref: 063 2012

The failure of political authorities in many countries of the Euromed region to respect freedom of expression and guarantee basic human rights puts democratic transition at risk, says the European Economic and Social Committee in a call for more accountability and civil society consultation.

The warning came at the Euromed Summit of Economic and Social Councils and Similar Institutions in Amman, Jordan, which brought together civil society players from countries all around the Mediterranean.

Reflecting on the discussions at the summit the European Economic and Social Committee's president Staffan Nilsson stated: “Governments in the region should not be afraid: it is not a case of civil society taking over their responsibilities. It is about engaging people and their organisations in order to foster better policy and decision-making in these countries. This benefits everyone.“
