President Staffan Nilsson has been invited by Ms Geoghegan-Quinn, Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, to attend the signing ceremony of the Joint Statement and Memoranda of Understanding between the Commission and the main European Stakeholder organisations which have expressed their joint commitment to contribute to the realisation of the European Research Area (ERA). The research organisations represented were: the European Association of Research and Technological Organisations (EARTO), the European University Association (EUA), the League of Research Universities (LERU), NordForsk, and Science Europe (SciEur)
On 17 July 2012, the Commission adopted a Communication on the European Research Area (ERA) entitled "A Reinforced European Research Area Partnership for Excellence and Growth". The implementation of ERA is vital in order to help Europe generate the jobs and growth it needs and create the conditions for a sustainable economic recovery. This Communication is addressed inter alia to the EESC, with which Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn wishes to cooperate in order to develop regional research capacity and strategies for smart specialisation as well as to address social security issues for researchers in the EU. President Nilsson supports the Communication and stresses the need for more research and innovation, with a reasonable budget for the future.
