European Year of Citizens 2013

9:00-13:00, EESC Building, room JDE 51, 99, Rue Belliard, 1040 Brussels Public Hearing - Brussels, Belgium

Background

The European Commission has suggested designating 2013 as the "European Year of Citizens". The European Economic and Social Committee is drawing up an opinion on the Commission's proposal. The Committee wished to give every European citizen, NGO, enterprise, trade union etc. an opportunity to contribute to this opinion, which will be sent to the European Parliament, Commission and Council once it has been adopted.

Citizens' contributions

To this end, the EESC has enabled every citizen to send his/her point of view on the Commission's proposal through a form published on this page. The deadline for contributions was Friday 20 January.

Public hearing on 26 January with live webstreaming

Citizens' contributions have fed into a public hearing organised by the Committee in Brussels on 26 January to discuss its work on the opinion. The hearing was also streamed live on this webpage.

Among the speakers: Jean Pierre Vadersteen, Deputy Director General of DG COMM (European Commission), Antigoni Papadopoulou and marie-Christine Vergiat, Members of the European Parliament, Jean-Marc Roirant, President of the EESC Liaison Group with European civil society organisations and networks. A debate with participants to the hearing followed their interventions.
