Rio+20 follow-up: European civil society contributions to the Commission's consultation

The European Economic and Social Committee is following up on its engagement to "bring Rio home". On 18 December the EESC organised together with the European Commission a public hearing  in order to enhance the impact of the Commission's ongoing consultation on the EU follow-up to Rio+20 by giving civil society representatives the opportunity to discuss statements related to the questions raised in the consultation.

We invited representatives from national and European civil society organisations and networks, national Economic and Social Councils and Sustainable Development Councils and think tanks to engage in discussion with each other and with representatives from EU institutions. The hearing was structured as such:

  • Introduction into the topics inclusive green economy and Sustainable Development Goals
  • Statements by civil society representatives
  • With the participation of European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik and EESC President Staffan Nilsson

On the very same day there the EESC organised a public hearing on The achievements and future prospects of the Millennium Development Goals: Input from civil society .
