Involving civil society in the implementation of the post-2015 agenda

New York, United States

The UN post-2015 agenda for sustainable development, which heads of state will adopt on an UN summit in September 2015, cannot be implemented and achieved by governments alone. Sustainable Development Goals will need the full engagement of diverse civil society actors to put them into practice. According to the UN General Secretary's Synthesis Report "the new agenda must become part of the contract between people, including civil society and responsible business, and their governments (…)."

Therefore, at the UN High-Level-Political-Forum session this year the role of civil society actors and stakeholders will be an important issue. This side event aims at contributing to this debate by looking into the broader experiences with civil society involvement in sustainable development policies and defining enabling conditions for a strong and active role of stakeholders.
