Half-way through his mandate as President of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), Staffan Nilsson is still an active farmer, keen to keep “a foot outside Brussels” whenever he has the possibility to.
Active in civil society organisations – as a student and as a farmer – since his youth, Staffan Nilsson also has rich and concrete experience with European integration, having taken part in different support groups dealing with the Baltic countries, Belarus, and Poland just after the fall of the Iron Curtain. He has been a Member of the EESC since Sweden joined the EU in 1995. Commission en direct met him to know more about his first fifteen months at the EESC’s helm, and what he plans for the rest of his mandate.
