EU, USA och Kanada delar värderingar som demokrati, mänskliga rättigheter och ekonomisk och politisk frihet och har utrikespolitiska intressen och säkerhetsintressen som överlappar varandra. USA och Kanada hör till EU:s främsta handelspartner och är också partner i utformningen av den internationella rättsordningen. De transatlantiska förbindelserna äger nu för tiden rum i en ny miljö och ställs inför allt större utmaningar. Vi anser att det civila samhällets delaktighet i detta förhållande utgör en garanti för att de transatlantiska förbindelserna ska kunna leva upp till allmänhetens förväntningar och på ett effektivt sätt bidra till att forma ett ömsesidigt fördelaktigt samarbete.

Det övergripande avtalet om ekonomi och handel mellan EU och Kanada (Ceta) och det strategiska partnerskapsavtalet undertecknades den 30 oktober 2016. Vi kommer att sträva efter att det civila samhället fortlöpande involveras i genomförandet av dessa avtal. Förhandlingarna om det transatlantiska partnerskapet för handel och investeringar mellan EU och USA (TTIP) står för närvarande stilla. TTIP-förhandlingarna har dock bidragit till att stärka kopplingarna mellan EU:s och USA:s civila samhälle och till att forma det civila samhällets åsikter om hur de framtida handelsförbindelserna mellan EU och USA bör se ut. Dessa resultat får inte gå förlorade. Vår uppföljningskommitté för transatlantiska förbindelser inrättades i september 2014 med uppdraget att övervaka de transatlantiska förbindelserna med det civila samhället och att upprätta en regelbunden dialog och ett regelbundet samråd om frågor som rör förbindelserna med USA och Kanada.

The External Relations Section (REX) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) is responsible for dialogue between European civil society organisations and their homologues from the countries with which the European Union has formal relations (e.g. under the form of a Free Trade Agreement). Through this dialogue, made possible by a series of bilateral bodies, and through specialized opinions and information reports, the Committee is able to concretely contribute to EU foreign policy.
