Dear Readers,

The spring promises to be an extremely busy and interesting time in European politics. The EESC is certainly already hard at work. One of the many reasons for this is that the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) is finally starting to take shape.

The EESC members welcomed the Portuguese Presidency's success in unblocking the political logjam around the conference. We have all been eager for the conference to go ahead because we firmly believe in its purpose. Now we cannot wait for it to start.

I believe that the EESC should be a permanent member of the CoFoE executive board. This would be a recognition of the Committee's important role as the main institutional intermediary in liaising with organised civil society. It is a view I expressed forcefully in my recent meetings with the presidents of the EU institutions, and at February's plenary debate with Commission Vice-President Dubravka Šuica, who leads the work on the CoFoE.
