Summary

Proposal for an opinion on the need for measures to improve EU citizens' mental health: the aim is to support the Spanish proposal to draw up a new European strategy for mental health, including specific recommendations for the Member States. Even before the pandemic, the EU had highlighted that mental health problems affect more than 84 million people across the EU, with costs to Member States estimated at over 4% of GDP (more than EUR 600 billion). In its European framework for action on mental health 2021–2025, the WHO calculated that more than 125 million people were affected.

A specific opinion would support the EU strategy on mental health and the actions being undertaken at EU level through the joint action ImpleMENTAL.
