As European as we can get! Bringing economy, solidarity and democracy together

The purpose of Civil Society Day 2013 is to illustrate how European citizenship can best be conceived and achieved if tied in with the economic, social and civic life of the European project and the policies that underpin it.
Beyond the lofty ideals that have been proclaimed for decades, it is actually in people's daily lives that active European citizenship must constantly renew itself and assert its relevance.

The internet and online communication technologies have triggered the increasing development of flexible tools for culture, work and free time. At the same time, however, they have allowed potentially harmful, illegal and risky activities and content to rapidly expand in the cyberspace....

Active labour market policies aim to improve the functioning of the labour market, notably by matching the unemployed or those with difficulties in the labour market to vacancies or jobs or by enhancing their employability with a view to future employment. However, during the crisis job creation and active labour market policies were largely affected by austerity measures.

Extraordinary meeting of the Workers' Group

On 28 February 2013, the Workers' Group organised an extraordinary meeting in Brussels. The morning session was devoted to internal matters. During the afternoon, there was a discussion on the theme "Employment and economic performance of the agri-food sector in the countries of the European Union".

Contribution to the decision-making process on the Euratom part of Horizon 2020

The last few months have seen the reconsideration of issues about nuclear safety and nuclear’s long-term contribution to the EU’s energy mix. The EESC and the European Commission are therefore organizing an open, balanced and exploratory process of dialogue and debate for all stakeholders in civil society.

The workshop is the follow up of the petition and the first step towards an initiative aiming to fill the gap between the Directives 2004/54/EC (on road tunnels) and 2008/96/EC (on road safety audits and inspections). A constructive informal discussion and concrete measures as a way forward are expected.

During the meeting, the Commission representatives (DG TRADE) provided information concerning implementation of the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and its trade and sustainable development chapter. The EU DAG discussed also and adopted its two opinions foreseen for presentation at the EU-Korea Civil Society Forum: on implementation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions and on green economy and free trade. Moreover, the EU DAG discussed and adopted its work programme for the years 2012-2013.

This hearing is part of the work on the opinion on "Manufacture, presentation and sale of tobacco and related products". Speakers will include representatives from the Tobacco industry, civil society organizations on public health, European Commission and European Parliament representatives. The results of the hearing will provide important input to the further work of the EESC study group on this topic.
