On 14th of September 2021 the co-chairs of the EESC Liaison Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the EESC and the European civil society organisations that are member of the EES Liaison Group. With a view to the Conference of the Future of Europe, this MoU aims to join forces and to co-organise joint activities, debates and events at EU, national, regional and local level over the next few months.

While Europe and its societies are still in the grip of the COVID-19 pandemic and with the Conference on the Future of Europe in its closing stages, the EESC will be holding its annual Civil Society Days in March 2022.

As we emerge from the pandemic, we are invited to actively play a leading role in co-shaping a new vision for the EU. What is certain is that Europe’s future is closely linked to the future of its industry: strong ambitions require strong and innovative companies that have the means to meet the needs of the digital and green transitions while boosting EU competitiveness.

The 2023 edition of the EESC's annual European Citizens' Initiative (ECI) Day took place on 8 June. Participants in Brussels and online joined us to discuss how to upskill citizens for a successful ECI with impact.

This study looks at the Conference on the Future of Europe’s (CoFoE) proposals on European democracy and the role of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). It explores different options for institutional reform of the EESC to best serve its purpose and increase citizens’ participation. To do this, the study examines different forms of participatory and deliberative practices, the current functions of the EESC, and the roles and structures of selected National Economic and Social Councils (NESCs).
