European Consumer Day 2019

On 27 March 2019, the EESC organised its 21st edition of the European Consumer Day in Brussels (EESC premises, room JDE 62) from 9.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. With young consumers at the heart of the programme, and the trends in consumption patterns driven by technology, we were talking about the role played by young people in this change and how they can influence the policy that affects them directly.

Three key sectors for young people were the subject of participatory workshops to discuss issues and opportunities in mobility, food and clothing. We also had a live debate on how social media impacts young people and their consumer choices and asked our expert speakers these questions:

  • How can we define young consumers? And which trends can we identify in their consumption patterns?
  • Is current EU consumer policy — based as it is on protection and ownership — adapted to today's models of consumption?
  • What are the potential regulatory developments to be considered in order to adapt consumer policy to these new models?
