It is an honour to make a statement for the 60th anniversary of the EESC, as I was a member from Greece for 34 years (1981-2015) and, at the time I left, the Committee's longest-serving member. When I started in the Ravenstein building there were only six women members out of a total of 156! Nowadays, I am happy to see over a hundred women out of 350 members in the Belliard premises.
On the invitation of Staffan Nilsson, a former president of the EESC (currently Co-President of the Swedish Rural Parliament, a civil society movement), Istvan Komoroczki, a member of the Employers’ Group and EESC sections NAT and REX, attended the three day meeting in Örnsköldsvik, 440 km north of Stockholm. This event, organised every second year, coincided with the start of the election campaign and so all Swedish political party leaders – facing elections on September 9, 2018 – gladly accepted a call to express their views about the need to develop areas of the Swedish country-side and the ways and means of doing so. A brief report by Istvan Komoroczki will follow.
Implementing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030 is no easy task. The SDGs aim to tackle all the key sustainability challenges that we are facing globally. Rather than making trade-offs between different SDGs, we need to seek solutions that simultaneously strengthen the economy, promote welfare and decrease the pressure on the climate and environment.
In September 2017, I was approached, in my former role as SDO President, by a coalition of non-state actors called the Europe Ambition 2030 Group who wanted to build on the "Rethink Europe" letter signed by the former President of the European Council, former prime ministers, former Commission vice-presidents, the current WTO executive director and former ministers of finance and labour, experts in finance, statistics, food security, gender issues and European policies, and other distinguished persons. The letter invites Europeans – both state and non-state actors - to "rethink Europe"’ in connection with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN Agenda 2030

Milena Angelova is the new vice-president of the European Economic and Social Committee responsible for budget. Maurizio Reale takes over as president of the Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT). Christa Schweng will hold the position of president of the Section for Employment, Social Affairs and Citizenship (SOC). Dimitris Dimitriadis will be representing the Employers' Group among the Quaestors. At the EESC plenary session held on 18 April, the members formally approved the results of a number of elections to determine who will hold the various posts within the EESC.
With the benefit of hindsight, one has to admit that the euro area of March 2018 is qualitatively quite different from the euro area of 2008. At that time, it was entirely preoccupied with weathering the intense pressure of the economic crisis, with the impact of the crisis serving to underscore its fragility. But over time, the more the euro area has absorbed the lessons from the crisis, the more robust it has become, not only in terms of its economic performance and stability, but also thanks to its better-equipped tool-box.
In order to bridge the skills gap, we must first identify precisely which skills are needed for the future. This remains difficult, due to the rapid pace of change we are seeing today. Adaptation of education systems, development of lifelong learning systems and close cooperation between employers, policy-makers and academics are some of the ways to help people adapt their skills to the demands of future labour markets. These were among the conclusions reached at the conference on
Bridging the Skills Gap for Growth and Job Creation – the Business Perspective, which took place on 22 March 2018 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
