Romanian Coal Regions in energy transition

The Consultative Commission on Industrial Change of the European Economic and Social Committee, in partnership with the National Trade Union Confederation MERIDIAN and relevant authorities in Romania, are organizing, on Thursday 13 September 2018, in Petroşani, Hunedoara County, in the Aula of Petroşani University, a High Level Conference with the theme: Romanian Coal Regions in energy transition.

Given that Member States' support measures for coal mining companies can no longer be applied after 31 of December 2018, according to the provisions of EU Council Decision no. 787 of 2010 on state aid for facilitating uncompetitive coal mines, it is very important that before the end of this year, the EU Council, the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Governments of the Member States concerned, to agree on the legal framework at European and national level for support measures during the energy transition process.

To meet these challenges, the European Economic and Social Committee's Plenary Session adopted on 25 May 2016 an opinion with the title Indigenous Coal in the EU's Energy Transition, following lively debates with civil society representatives, but also with the European Commission.

Following this exercise of social and civic dialogue, as well as other debates at European level with the social partners and representatives of the regions concerned, the European Commission launched the Platform on Coal Regions in Transition on 11 December 2017 in Strasbourg.
